NATO Prepares Arctic Mission in Response to Russian, Chinese Presence
The alliance’s top commander, US Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, made the comments during an official visit to Luxembourg, where he held talks with the country’s defense leadership, as stated by reports.
After the meetings, Grynkewich told reporters that preparations are nearly complete for an operation known as “Arctic Sentry,” which is designed to reinforce NATO’s presence and awareness in the far north. He emphasized that the mission has not yet been launched.
He noted that additional information on the operation was expected from NATO’s Joint Force Command in Norfolk, Virginia, on Tuesday, adding that an official announcement could be made in the days ahead if all necessary requirements are fulfilled.
Grynkewich also underlined Washington’s continued backing of NATO’s collective defense principle under Article 5, calling it “ironclad.” He said there were no signs that the United States intended to scale back its involvement in the alliance and stressed ongoing efforts to keep NATO a credible and effective military force.
Addressing the war in Ukraine, Grynkewich said that demilitarization was not a viable option while fighting continues. He described the situation as challenging due to harsh winter conditions and persistent Russian strikes on infrastructure. He also said that although direct communication between the US and Russia has been restored, any future political decisions would be handled at the political level.
