China calls on EU to take open mindset to foreign investment
“The essence of China-EU economic and trade relations lies in complementary advantages and mutual benefit and win-win outcomes,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson says during a regular briefing in Beijing.
He adds that China’s competitive edge in products does not stem from subsidies but from “massive investment in research and development, full market competition, and a complete industrial chain working together.”
The comments follow remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he highlighted Europe’s need for greater Chinese investment in key sectors to drive growth, facilitate technology transfer, and avoid a focus solely on exports to Europe.
“China is welcome, but what we need is more Chinese foreign direct investments in Europe, in some key sectors, to contribute to our growth, to transfer some technologies, and not just to export towards Europe,” Macron said, according to reports.
In response, the Chinese official notes that Beijing has “never deliberately pursued trade surpluses” and aims to serve both as “the world’s factory” and “the world’s market.”
Bilateral trade between China and the EU, the world’s second-largest economy, totaled $849.81 billion last year, according to Chinese customs authorities.
The spokesperson expresses hope that Europe will adopt a long-term perspective, “meet China halfway,” and support the sustained and healthy development of economic and trade ties between the two sides.
