China urges US to reduce nuclear stockpile, lead disarmament efforts
Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, “The US, as a nuclear superpower sitting on the world’s biggest nuclear arsenal, must fulfill its special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament, further make drastic and substantive cuts to its nuclear arsenal, and create conditions for other nuclear-weapon states to join the nuclear disarmament process. This should be a high priority for the US.”
Lin’s remarks came in response to reports that China has expanded its intercontinental ballistic missile capacity by 100 across three silo fields, while showing little interest in arms control negotiations. He criticized US statements on the matter as “a pretext for speeding up the upgrade of US nuclear power and disrupting global strategic stability,” urging the international community to remain cautious.
He emphasized that Beijing remains committed to a no-first-use nuclear policy and maintains a defensive nuclear strategy, stating, “China keeps its nuclear strength at the minimum level required by national security and does not engage in any nuclear arms race with any country.”
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia possesses the world’s largest nuclear arsenal with 5,459 warheads, followed by the US with 5,177, together accounting for about 90% of global nuclear weapons. China’s arsenal, while smaller, has grown rapidly from 500 to 600 warheads over the past year, marking the fastest expansion among all nuclear-armed states.
